Logan Takes 1st Place at Hansville Pinewood Derby

5 02 2011

Logan's Podcast NASCAR, with prime sponsor SpinalColumnRadio.com, takes first place at the GHCC Pinewood Derby

Fueled with “The Power of the Podcast,” Logan Lamar took first place at the 2011 Greater Hansville Community Center Pinewood Derby.  In NASCAR fashion, Logan’s racer was stickered up with the six different podcasts that Dad (Dr. Lamar) currently produces — with the flagship podcast, SpinalColumnRadio, prominently positioned for all to see. And to top it off, Logan wore appropriate attire.

Acting as audio-engineer, Logan helps Dad produce their smorgasbord of podcasts for the community and beyond: Spinal Column Radio, Spine BitesService Above Self Radio, Kingston Chamber Podcast, A Happy Home Podcast, and Scandia Bible Church Podcast.

In addition to Logan’s win, younger brother Clayton’s “Podcast Truck” smoked competition and took second place in an extremely close battle for first.

Good Job Boys!…. and thanks for letting us sponsor you.  ;-)

Voice of the Kingston Passenger Ferry

Welcome Aboard the Spirit of Kingston!

Welcome Aboard the Spirit of Kingston!

With well over a decade of community backing and persistence, the town of Kingston FINALLY attained a nautical transportation link to the downtown core of Seattle…. and from the looks of it, it has a great chance of staying afloat!

With such strong community involvement in the makings of the ferry that we now see today, I, along with Linda Fyfe, were very proud and honored when Sound Runner asked us to be the safety announcement “voices” that commuters listen to everyday as they travel to and from work.

Below are the recordings of our first go at this.  :-)

Kingston Chamber Radio

16 06 2010

It seemed a shame to have our SpinalColumnRadio Podcast Studio sit idle in between episodes, so Dr. Lamar and audio-engineer-son, Logan, teamed up with the Excecutive Director of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce, Linda Fyfe, to help record and produce their weekly KITZ radio spots.  Heard daily at 10:30 am on the 1400 AM Kitsap County Radio Station (click here for a live stream), Dr. Lamar and Linda Fyfe run down the North End Chamber News in 2 minutes flat.  The broadcast is also blasted out in the Kingston Chamber Email Update and is available on the Kingston Chamber website. Plans to make the broadcast available via podcast through RSS and iTunes are set for the upcoming future.

Kites Over Kingston A Hit!

19 04 2010

They say that the “Third Time’s a Charm.” And so it was for the 3rd Annual Kites Over Kingston that took place on April 10, 2010.  We had lots of kids, lots of kites, hot dogs, kite making, popcorn, live brass band music, sun, fun, and, of course, wind.  I was the emcee and my kids helped at the kite making table. Good ol’ Hometown Kingston Fun!

Special Thanks to my Co-chair Susan Rodgers of Design Connection for doing the majority of the “behind the scene work.” Thank you to Connie at Kingston Quilt Shop for making our wonderful Kite awards… as well as Nick over at Pizza Factory for supplying us with more straws than we needed for our Kite Making Station, and the free Mini Pizzas for our award winners.  Also thank you to our judges — Sally Christy, Rick Lanning, and Sharon Nuss.  Oh, and then there’s Pete DeBoer for allowing us the use of his personal PA system.

Kites Over Kingston is sponsored by the Events Committee of your Kingston Chamber of Commerce.

Check out the slide show below.  It’s like you were there!

Old Mill Days

16 09 2009

Support your local Rotary Club and have a blast doing it!

old mill days rotary

We at the Kingston Rotary Club will rolling up our sleeves as Port Gamble rings in Autumn with their 4th Annual Old Mill Days.

You’ll find us in the Pavillion Tent serving up tasty Bratwurst lunches and dinners with an “Oktoberfest flare.”  Bring the whole family!

As one Seattle Blogger put it,  “where else could you possibly witness fireworks, steam donkey logging and belly dancing all in one location? This will be a lot of fun and a great way to kick off autumn.”  Hope to see you there!

Check out the video below and visit the Old Mill Days website for more information.

Kathleen Sutton Inspirational Fund

14 09 2009

I remember when I first stepped foot in Kingston back in 1996, Kathleen Sutton was the first person I met.  Before long, I was sitting at her breakfast table in her kitchen at a Chamber of Commerce board meeting wondering how I had got there.  Six years later, she passed on the reigns of the Chamber Presidency to me.

For me, like so many that knew her, Kathleen left an impression and was truly an inspiration.  While Kathleen may not have triumphed her six year battle with breast cancer, her memory charges on and continues to inspire those who are touched by the work of the Kathleen Sutton Inspirational Fund — helping others “win” the breast cancer battle by assisting with their travel and ferry costs associated with receiving treatment.

We encourage you to join us in getting behind this great, local, cause by attending —or donating to— their 7th Annual Auction on October 3, 2009.

Paige Lamar “Slugs” Her Way to the Top with a Rhyme!

8 08 2009

Slug

Paige the Slug

Paige the Slug!

Congratulations to Dr. Lamar’s eldest daughter, Paige, whose slug poetry won her top prize at  Kingston Art Gallery’s 2009 Slug inFESTation!  The slug poetry contest was just one aspect of the Art Gallery’s clever, economic-boosting-community-event.  Over 100 hand-made and decorated ceramic slugs were hidden in and about the businesses of our “Little City by the Sea.”  “Slug Hunters” had to be properly licensed — of course — in order to embark on the capture one of these unique works of art, and the businesses that harbored them had to pay for the privilege too.  [Probably the only time anyone would actually want to "pay" to have a slug]. Hunters were issued a map of where to look and were set loose on the the town for the August 8th Slug Hunting Season.

[Let's see... a bunch of people milling around Kingston, visiting businesses that perhaps they've never stepped foot into before — let alone knew existed.  That's what I call a "Slug Stimulus Package!" :-) ]

Paige reads poem

Paige reads her poem at the "After Hunting Party" held at the Kingston Art Gallery to a crowd of slug enthusiasts.

The day of “hunting” ended at the Kingston Art Gallery for an “After Hunting Party” of sorts where hunters had their slugs signed by the artists, pictures taken with their catch, and official  inFESTation “slug gear” picked up for their wardrobe.  A Slug Silent Auction [last time I checked, most slugs are silent] also took place in which some of the more ornate and artistic slugs were put on the block to help raise money for the Gallery.

As part of the festivities, a call was put out to our town’s children to create “Slug Poetry.”…. And well, that’s where our Paige comes in.  As the winner of the poetry contest, which was judged by the editors of Crab Creek Review Literary Journal, Paige received an award and was asked to read her poem at the “After Hunting Party” held at the Kingston Art Gallery.  Well Done Paige!

And the rest, as they say, is just a trail of slime………
